Doctorow on Copyright Irony at London’s National Portrait Gallery
Cory Doctorow‘s latest Guardian column, called “Warhol is turning in his grave,” explains the irony in having an art show featuring rampant remixes of others’ art and banning photography due to a supposed copyright, even claiming that the sign stating the ban could not be photographed.
“I wasn’t even allowed to photograph the “No Photographs” sign. A member of staff explained that the typography and layout of the signs was itself copyrighted.”
The British are known for their wit, no? Perhaps this is just a joke that only people semi-knowledgeable in copyright law and, well, common sense will get. Everyone else will just put their cameras away without a second thought.
